China Payment Methods
Alipay, WeChat Pay, QR code dominance, and the world's largest mobile payment ecosystem.
China operates the world's largest mobile payment ecosystem, with digital wallets accounting for over 80% of all online and offline transaction volume. The market is dominated by two ecosystem giants: Alipay (Ant Group) and WeChat Pay (Tencent).
Alipay
Alipay is the payment arm of Ant Group and the oldest third-party payment platform in China, launched in 2004. It serves over 1.3 billion users globally and processes transactions across e-commerce (Alibaba ecosystem), in-store retail, peer-to-peer transfers, and wealth management. Alipay supports QR code payments, in-app checkouts, and mini-program integrations.
WeChat Pay
WeChat Pay is embedded within the WeChat super-app (1.2 billion+ monthly active users). It enables seamless social payments — from splitting bills to gifting money during holidays — and in-store QR payments. WeChat Pay's unique advantage is its deep integration with China's social commerce ecosystem, including WeChat Stores and Moments advertising.
QR Code Dominance
QR code payments are ubiquitous in China. Consumers scan merchant-presented QR codes or present their own loyalty+payment QR codes at checkout. This infrastructure is so deeply embedded that even street vendors and rural shops accept QR payments, making China a nearly cashless society in urban areas.
UnionPay
UnionPay is China's state-backed bank card network and the world's largest card scheme by transaction volume. While declining in relative share, UnionPay still processes significant transaction volume and is the primary gateway for international tourists. UnionPay also operates its own QR code standard and mobile wallet (UnionPay Mobile QuickPass).
Cross-Border Payments
For international merchants targeting Chinese consumers, integration with Alipay and WeChat Pay is essential. Both platforms offer cross-border payment solutions that allow Chinese consumers to pay in RMB while merchants receive settlement in their local currency. Cross-border e-commerce platforms like Tmall Global and JD Worldwide also rely on these payment rails.
